Philosophy Statement
Education is an ongoing process that is not exclusive to schools. The motivation for effective learning comes from the individual. It does not work well in all cases, and the values of the educator or educational system are imposed upon the learner. We trust that these values are beneficial to the learner and society. Formal education is a tool used to socialize an individual.
Effective education is, or will be, relevant to the learner’s life. Effective education is connected to the interest of the learner. Relevant connections increase personal interest. Effective education is experience based. It is the educator’s responsibility to balance effective educational practices with the needs of the learner and the community in which he or she lives.
Public education I have experienced:
Mostly, the United States society does not value education as an investment opportunity that will produce a good, monetary, return. Political rhetoric and regulation is not accompanied by adequate financial support for public schools. This is at a time when many, traditionally parental, child raising responsibilities are being shifted to public education.
In the future our society must reach a consensus regarding the role of education. All sectors, public and private, must support these common goals, financially and morally, to best meet the needs of the learner and society.
